Mimika Orchestra is a 19-member avant-garde jazz and world music orchestra consisting of three vocalists, a prominent rhythm section, and numerous wind instruments, performing Murtić’s conceptual music, which is an eclectic blend of jazz, folklore, world, and progressive music. The orchestra is currently promoting its fourth studio album titled “Altur Mur” (in the Veliot dialect of Krk Island – Altar of the Sea), which explores the Mediterranean basin, cultures and civilizations, and interpersonal relationships on an imaginary island in the sea, with an endless masquerade in the narrative. The narrative lyrics are a unique mix of archaic, island, and invented Mediterranean dialects penned by poet Marta Kolega.
The orchestra was founded by lead vocalist Maja Rivić and Mak Murtić in 2010 in London and has since been active in England, Croatia, and internationally. The ensemble currently includes some of the most prominent names in the local jazz, experimental, rock, folk, and classical scenes, unifying what the region has to offer musically.
